What to Be Aware of Before Joining a Virtual Power Plant

Joining a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) can be a smart move  for your wallet, your battery, and the energy grid. But like any big decision, it’s worth going in with your eyes open.

Here are a few things to keep in mind before you sign on the dotted line.

You Might Lose Some Control

By joining a VPP, you’re letting your provider use some of your battery’s stored energy, usually during peak demand times. That’s the whole idea.

But it’s worth asking:

  • Can I set limits on how much of my battery is shared?
  • Will it affect my ability to use that energy at home?
  • What happens if I want to opt out later?

Battery Wear and Tear

Using your battery more often means it cycles more and over time, that can affect its lifespan. The impact is usually minor, but it’s still something to consider.

We recommend:

  • Asking your VPP provider how often your battery will be used
  • Checking if your battery warranty covers VPP participation

The Fine Print Matters

Some VPP contracts come with:

  • Exit fees if you leave early
  • Long-term lock-ins
  • Minimum participation requirements

Always read the small print.

Data Sharing & Privacy

VPPs rely on live data from your battery system to work efficiently. That means sharing some info with your provider like usage patterns, battery charge levels, and solar output.

Just make sure their privacy policy is solid, and your data stays protected.

Don’t Forget How To Claim Your VPP Rebate, The Right Way

If you’re in NSW or SA, you may be eligible for a cash rebate just for joining a VPP,  but there’s a catch:

You must go through an accredited provider to claim it. Right now, we’re the only provider in Australia accredited to unlock that VPP rebate.

If you don’t use an accredited provider, you could miss out on:

  • Up to $1,015 in NSW
  • Up to $2,050 in SA
  • The rebate being paid upfront, not over years

We take care of the paperwork, the compliance and the cashback rebate so you get the full benefit with zero hassle.
