Hot Water Systems

What is a heat pump hot water system?

A heat pump hot water system uses electricity to move heat from the surrounding air into the water, rather than generating heat directly. This makes them extremely energy-efficient, typically 3-4 times more efficient than conventional electric hot water systems.

What is the difference between solar hot water and solar PV with a heat pump?

Solar hot water systems use panels (collectors) to directly heat water using the sun’s heat. Solar PV systems generate electricity that can power a heat pump or electric hot water system. Both are energy-efficient options, but they work differently. Our team can explain which option best suits your situation.

How long does a hot water system installation take?

Most hot water system replacements can be completed in one day. However, if additional plumbing or electrical work is required, it may take longer. Our installer will provide a timeframe during the assessment.

Will my hot water be disconnected during installation?

Yes, your hot water will be temporarily unavailable during the installation. We aim to complete installations as quickly as possible to minimise disruption, typically within a few hours.

What size hot water system do I need?

The appropriate size depends on your household size and hot water usage patterns. As a general guide:

  • 1-2 people: 150-200 litre tank
  • 3-4 people: 250-315 litre tank
  • 5+ people: 400+ litre tank

Our consultants will assess your needs and recommend the right size.

Do heat pump hot water systems work in cold weather?

Yes. Modern heat pump systems are designed to operate efficiently in a wide range of temperatures, including cooler South Australian winters. Some models have electric booster elements for very cold days.

How long do heat pump hot water systems last?

Quality heat pump systems typically last 10-15 years with proper maintenance, similar to conventional electric or gas systems.

Is there a warranty on the hot water system installation?

Yes. Installations include a workmanship warranty from MAC Trade Services, and the hot water system itself comes with a manufacturer’s warranty (typically 5-10 years). Specific warranty details will be provided in your quote.

What maintenance does a heat pump hot water system require?

Heat pumps require minimal maintenance. We recommend an annual professional service check and keeping the area around the unit clear of debris to ensure optimal airflow.

Can I choose the brand and model of my hot water system?

Yes, you can choose from our range of energy-efficient models that meet REPS eligibility requirements. Our team will discuss available options and help you select the best system for your needs and budget.

What should I do if I experience a problem with my hot water system after installation?

If something doesn’t seem right after your installation, get in touch with us. Call our customer service team on 1300 430 917 or email customerservice@mactradeservices.com.au.

Explain the issue, the installation date, and address, and our team will make an assessment and contact you (if required) to arrange repair or replacement.

Hot water rebates

What types of hot water systems are eligible under REPS?

Eligible systems include energy-efficient hot water systems such as:

  • Heat pump hot water systems
  • Solar hot water systems
  • High-efficiency gas hot water systems (in some cases)

Systems must meet minimum energy efficiency requirements set by REPS.

Can I upgrade my existing hot water system under REPS?

Yes, if you have an existing, inefficient hot water system, you may be eligible to upgrade to a more energy-efficient model under REPS, provided you have not previously received REPS support for hot water at this property.

How much can I save with a REPS hot water upgrade?

The savings depend on your current system, the new system type, your household size, and hot water usage. REPS incentives significantly reduce the upfront cost, and energy-efficient systems deliver ongoing savings through lower energy bills. Our team can provide estimated savings when you receive your quote.

Am I eligible for a Priority Group rebate for hot water?

If you hold a concession or health care card, participate in a retailer hardship program, receive the SA Government Energy Concession, or rent for $500 per week or less, you may qualify as a Priority Group household and receive a higher rebate, reducing the upfront cost.
